What to Expect After Getting Braces?
Braces can be a pain. Getting them on is a long process, and wearing them is an even longer one. Here are a few things commonly experienced after getting braces. Also remember you can always ask your orthodontist for advice.-
The Process
-
The process of putting on braces typically takes one or two hours in the orthodontist's chair. You will feel an uncomfortable pressure or a little pain, depending on how sensitive your mouth is. Many dentists recommend taking ibuprofen before your appointment if you are especially sensitive, as no numbing procedure is used.
Soreness
-
The most common complaint after getting braces on is soreness of the cheek and lips. The braces are usually metal, and your mouth is not used to having metal in it. Minor abrasions from the braces might make it uncomfortable to chew and eat. This soreness should go away after a few days, and it can be helped by applying dental wax over the brackets so they do not rub as much.
Restrictions
-
Braces can become loosened if you eat foods that are too tough or chewy. Some foods to avoid: beef jerky, bubble gum, gummi bears, nuts, popcorn and taffy. Cut apples, pears, and other hard fruit into slices, and cut meat off a bone.
Cleaning
-
Braces often get food particles stuck in them, so look into special cleaning devices. An electric toothbrush is a good bet. So are specialized tools that clean underneath the braces wire or spray water into hard-to-reach places in the mouth.
