Wound Care: What to Do When an Object Remains in Place (No Bleeding)
Seek immediate medical attention. Do not attempt to remove the object yourself, as this could cause further damage and/or bleeding.
In the meantime, you can take the following steps to help control the bleeding and reduce the risk of infection:
- Apply pressure to the wound. Use a clean cloth or bandage to apply pressure to the wound and stop any bleeding.
- Elevate the injured area. If possible, elevate the injured area above the heart to help reduce swelling and pain.
- Keep the wound clean. Clean the wound gently with soap and water, and be sure to remove any dirt or debris.
- Apply a sterile bandage. Once the wound is clean, cover it with a sterile bandage to help protect it from infection.
Again, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible for any penetrating wound.
