First Aid: Stabilizing Impaled Objects - Expert Guidance
If an object is impaled in a person, do not attempt to remove it. Stabilization is the action of keeping the object secured in place until professional help arrives.- Try to control bleeding around the object (not from it).
- Apply a sterile dressing or clean cloth around the object to minimize movement.
- If object is protruding from both sides, add bulky dressings on each side.
- Secure dressing with roller bandage or tape.
- Elevate the injured area if possible to reduce swelling.
