X-ray Preparation Guide: What to Expect Before Your Scan
Different X-rays require different preparations. Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind when planning for your radiological test.
Instructions
Wear easy-to-remove clothes. You will probably have to undress partially.
Leave your valuables at home to be on the safe side. Most times, you'll be asked to store your clothes and valuables in the hospital locker. Remove any jewelry that would distort the X-ray. For a chest X-ray, remove necklaces.
Arrive on time. You may need to come in early to fill out paperwork and/or get blood drawn.
Sign your permit. Even though most X-rays are noninvasive, a permit is usually required.
Empty your bladder before your X-ray unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. There are only a few tests, like ultrasound, that demand you have a full bladder. Remember that you may be sitting in a cool and strange room, partially clothed, for up to 30 minutes.
Ask questions before your X-ray. Understand why you're having the test and what your doctor is looking for.
Tell your X-ray technician if you experience dizziness or light-headedness when lying down or getting up at home.
