How to Treat Achilles Tendinitis
Achilles tendinitis is the inflammation of the Achilles tendon due to overexertion. Treating this condition entails a regimen comprised mostly of rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) for the first 48 to 72 hours.Things You'll Need
- Cold Compresses
- Ibuprofen
- Plastic Freezer Bags
- Pots
- Athletic Tapes
Instructions
Stop what you're doing and rest the injured area - that is, refrain from participating in the activity that precipitated the pain until the swelling has subsided.
Take two ibuprofen every 4 to 6 hours with the onset of symptoms.
Apply ice for 20 to 40 minutes every 2 hours, for 24 to 48 hours. Wrap a plastic bag of ice in a towel before placing it against the skin, or soak the foot in a cooking pot or stream of icy water. This will decrease swelling, pain and inflammation.
Compress the swollen area by wrapping it in an elastic bandage, ace bandage or athletic tape to limit movement and reduce swelling, allowing the tendons to rest.
Elevate the injured area to above the level of the heart. This will help reduce internal bleeding and swelling.
Drink lots of water. Urine should be clear in color and copious in quantity.
