How to Clean a Wound
A wound will must be cleaned to remove any dirt or other debris that may be present. Serious complications, such as an infection that travels through the bloodstream, can develop if a wound is not cleaned as soon as possible.
Instructions
Position the injured person with the wound over a sink or basin of water. Gather a towel, washcloth, soap and sterile gauze. Grab a first aid kit if you have it. If you are in the wilderness, any clean cloth will work in an emergency.
Rinse the wound with lukewarm or room temperature water. Look at the wound to be sure it doesn't contain any dirt. Keep rinsing until it looks free of any contaminants.
Use a clean cloth with soap and water to wash the skin surrounding the wound. Be gentle to avoid tearing off any skin that may be on the edges of the wound.
Blot the wound with a clean cloth or a piece of sterile gauze if available and continue washing.
Dry the area around the wound completely. Use a towel or clean cloth. Avoid rubbing the area of the wound. Instead blot the area gently to avoid causing additional irritation and pain.
