Cut Tendon Injury: First Aid, Treatment & Recovery
Tendons are tissues that connect muscles in the body to bone and allow for a range of movement. If tendons tear or are cut, mobility of areas such as the fingers in the hand, leg or foot may be inhibited.-
First Aid
-
First aid should be applied to the area where tendons have been cut. If a tendon is ruptured or cut, ice should be applied to the affected area immediately. The area that is injured should be compressed to slow down blood flow. A doctor visit is needed to clean and treat the area and see if surgery is necessary.
Surgery
-
Tendons cannot heal unless the ends of the tendon are touching. Surgery to repair or sew tendons back to muscle or bone may be necessary in extreme injuries.
Help Healing
-
Ice, compression and elevating the injured area may help speed along the healing process. A tetanus shot, antibiotics or stitches may be needed to help heal torn tendons. Therapy following surgery or first aid helps healing tendons regroup and regain proper function and mobility.
