Understanding the Plague: Historical Control & Modern Management
There is no evidence to suggest that the plague was ever completely 'gotten rid of'. The plague still exists today as bubonic plague and less serious septicemic or pneumonic plague. The deadliest pandemic event in history was the bubonic plague pandemic that killed an estimated 75 to 200 million people in the 14th century.
Although there are still occasional isolated outbreaks of bubonic plague reported around the world, it is controlled by modern medical measures such as antibiotics, sanitation and pest control.
