Causes of Mouth Ulcers: Trauma, Nutrition & Medical Conditions
There are a number of causes of mouth ulcers, including:
* Trauma: Biting the inside of your cheek or lip, brushing your teeth too hard, or other injuries to the mouth can cause ulcers.
* Nutritional deficiencies: A lack of certain vitamins and minerals, such as iron, folate, and vitamin B12, can lead to the development of mouth ulcers.
* Certain medical conditions: Mouth ulcers can be a symptom of a variety of medical conditions, including Crohn's disease, celiac disease, lupus, and Behçet's disease.
* Hormonal changes: Women are more likely to get mouth ulcers during pregnancy or while menstruating.
* Stress: Stress can trigger the development of mouth ulcers.
* Genetics: Some people are more likely to develop mouth ulcers if they have a family history of the condition.
Most mouth ulcers are minor and will heal on their own within a few days or weeks. However, some ulcers can be more severe and require treatment. If you have a mouth ulcer that is large, painful, or does not heal within a few weeks, you should see a doctor.
