How to Treat 2nd Stage Bed Sores
Second-stage bed sores are ulcers that result from constant pressure on the skin. Unlike first-stage bedsores that are red, tender spots, second-stage bed sores are open lesions with swelling, blistering and skin necrosis. Treating second-stage bed sores quickly and properly helps prevent the condition moving into stage 3 and stage 4 infections.Things You'll Need
- Scalpel
- Water pressure jets
- Saline solution
- Medicinal honey
- Antibacterial dressing/gauze
Instructions
Examine the bed sore to determine the specific course of treatment.
Clean the sore and the area around the sore to prevent infection.
Remove dead tissue from around the lesion if there is any. This procedure can be done with a scalpel or with a saline hydrotherapy method using water pressure jets. Note: This should only be done by a medical provider.
Coat the lesion with medicinal honey. Apply an antibacterial dressing to the wound.
Reposition the patient frequently and inspect the wounds. Begin a round of antibiotics to fight any possible infection.
Do steps 2 through 5 as needed to keep the wound from being infected or worsening.
