How to Explain Abnormal Thyroid Readings
The thyroid is an important endocrine gland which helps regulate our metabolisms. When our thyroid gland is producing too much or not enough of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4, blood tests will show abnormal hormone levels. Your doctor will be able to prescribe the best treatment for any thyroid condition.
Instructions
Know the difference between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism means your thyroid gland isn't producing enough hormones and hyperthyroidism means your thyroid is producing too much hormones. Either condition is generally the culprit of abnormal thyroid blood test results.
Review your test results with your doctor. If your results are abnormal, he should tell you where you lie on the thyroid hormone spectrum (high or low). He'll also ask you to list any symptoms you may be having. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include dry skin, fatigue, depression and heavy menstrual periods in women. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include nervousness, mood swings, and a rapid heartbeat. Note that your abnormal test results may not be a result of a serious thyroid condition, but one of a short term condition such as acute thyroiditis.
Discuss treatment options with your doctor. Treatment for hypothyroidism is generally a synthetic thyroid hormone given in pill form, while hyperthyroidism is usually treated with a beta blocker pill.
