Bedtime for 6-Year-Olds: Expert Sleep Schedule & Tips
Most 6 year olds need 10-12 hours of sleep each night. This means that they should go to bed at around 7-8pm on school nights. Some children may need to go to bed a little earlier or later than this, but it is important to stick to a regular bedtime as much as possible.
As a general guideline, bedtime should be adjusted:
- by half an hour earlier for every hour of after school activity
- to an hour earlier for every night of the school week to allow plenty of time to wind down and rest before waking naturally.
Here are some tips for helping your child get to bed on time:
* Establish a regular bedtime routine. This could include taking a bath, reading a book, and saying prayers.
* Make sure your child's bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool.
* Avoid giving your child caffeine or sugar before bed.
* Create a calming environment.
* Don't let your child watch TV or play video games in bed.
* Be consistent with your bedtime routine.
