Skeletal X-ray vs. DEXA Scan: Understanding the Difference
No. A skeletal x-ray survey and a DEXA scan are not the same.
Skeletal x-ray survey focuses on the bones and joints. It is used for diagnosing fractures, infections, arthritis and some developmental disorders.
DEXA scan, formally known as dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry measures the amount of bone mineral content (BMC) and can assess fracture risk.
Although both skeletal x-ray and DEXA scan may be performed on the same day the studies are fundamentally different.
