Is bronchoscopy strictly a diagnostic procedure?

Bronchoscopy is not strictly a diagnostic procedure. While it is primarily used for diagnostic purposes, such as examining the airways and collecting tissue samples for biopsy, it can also be used for therapeutic interventions.

During a bronchoscopy, the bronchoscope can be used to:

1. Remove foreign objects: If there are foreign objects lodged in the airways, such as food particles, mucus plugs, or small objects like toys or coins, they can be removed using specialized instruments passed through the bronchoscope.

2. Dilate narrowed airways: In cases of airway narrowing due to conditions like tumors or scarring, bronchoscopy can be used to insert stents or balloons to widen the airway and improve breathing.

3. Administer medications: Certain medications can be delivered directly to specific areas of the lungs through the bronchoscope, such as antibiotics for localized infections or bronchodilators for asthma.

4. Thermal ablation: In some cases, bronchoscopy can be used for thermal ablation, which involves destroying abnormal or cancerous tissue using heat energy delivered through specialized probes inserted into the bronchoscope.

5. Laser therapy: Bronchoscopic laser therapy can be used to remove tumors, scar tissue, or blockages in the airways by precisely vaporizing the affected areas.

6. Lung volume reduction therapy: In patients with advanced emphysema, bronchoscopic lung volume reduction therapy can be performed to reduce the volume of the damaged lung tissue and improve breathing capacity.

7. Transbronchial biopsy: Transbronchial biopsy is a procedure in which a sample of lung tissue is obtained through the bronchoscope for further examination and diagnosis.

8. Bronchial thermoplasty: Bronchial thermoplasty is a treatment for severe asthma, where heat is delivered to the airways through a bronchoscope to reduce airway hyperactivity.

These therapeutic applications make bronchoscopy a versatile procedure that combines diagnostic capabilities with the ability to intervene and treat various respiratory conditions.
