In what area of the lungs does respiration occur?

The exchange of gases in mammals occurs in the lungs. Within the lungs, respiration occurs in the alveoli, which are tiny sacs lined with capillaries (tiny blood vessels). The alveoli provide a vast surface area for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air and the blood.
