Blood clots in the lungs, also known as pulmonary embolism (PE), is a serious medical condition that requires prompt treatment. Symptoms of PE can include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood, and rapid heart rate.
Treatment for PE may include:
* Oxygen therapy to help improve oxygen levels in the blood
* Anticoagulants to prevent further blood clots from forming
* Thrombolytics to dissolve existing blood clots
* Surgery to remove large blood clots that are blocking blood flow to the lungs
Preventing blood clots in the lungs
There are a number of things you can do to help prevent blood clots in the lungs, including:
* Maintaining a healthy weight
* Getting regular exercise
* Not smoking
* Avoiding prolonged sitting or standing
* Drinking plenty of fluids
* Eating a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
If you have any risk factors for blood clots, such as a family history of PE, talk to your doctor about ways to reduce your risk.
