Ringworm Remedy Shampoo
Ringworm is not--as it's name suggests--caused by a worm. The ringworm rash is actually caused by a fungal infection of the skin that affects various parts of the body. When children develop ringworm, it usually appears on the torso or the scalp. Scalp ringworm is treated with medicated shampoos or creams applied topically to the affected area.-
Medicated Shampoo
-
Your doctor may recommend using a shampoo medicated with selenium sulfide to treat the ringworm. Selenium sulfide is used in dandruff shampoos and works to control excess skin shedding that results in dandruff. For ringworm of the scalp, the medication kills the fungus and controls itching.
The ingredient in these shampoos is also used as a lotion to treat ringworm of other areas of the body. Allow the shampoo to remain on the scalp for a few minutes before rinsing. Rinse the medication completely from the scalp and skin after a treatment. Avoid overusing prescription-strength shampoos.
Over-the-counter medicated shampoos are typically used to control dandruff. You may need a stronger shampoo to treat ringworm on the scalp.
Herbal Shampoos
-
Try tea tree oil in your shampoo for an herbal ringworm treatment. Tea tree oil is an effective treatment for the type of fungus that is responsible for ringworm or nail fungus. Use the oil full-strength directly on the affected areas of the scalp, or you can add it to your shampoo as you need it. Add a few drops of the oil to 2 oz. of shampoo at a time. Leave the shampoo on your scalp for five to 10 minutes to allow the oil to work on the fungus.
Oregano oil is used in the same manner as tea tree oil to kill the fungus causing ringworm.
Make your own shampoo to treat ringworm and save some money on your medications and shampoos. A good herbal shampoo can be made by steeping anti-fungal herbs with spring water. Boil enough water to fill your jar or shampoo bottle. Steep the herbs in the boiling water for at least 15 minutes to get all of the anti-fungal properties from the herbs into the water. Add 3 tbsp of castile soap, which is available online or in herbal shops. Mix the herbal shampoo well before using.
