Tetanus Vaccine Schedule & Booster Information - UpToDate
The recommended primary tetanus vaccination schedule for children and adults is as follows:
- 3 tetanus shots at 2, 4, 6 months
- Booster shots at ages 12-15 months and 4-6 years
- Tetanus and diphtheria ("Td") booster every 10 years
Additional tetanus shots may be recommended in some cases, such as:
- Deep or puncture wounds contaminated with soil, dust, or manure
- Burns
- Animal bites
- Puncture wounds from rusty metal or other objects that may have been contaminated with tetanus bacteria
