Throat Pimples & Painful Sores: Causes & Treatment
It's uncommon to get pimples on the throat that specifically cause painful sores. While acne can occur on the face, neck, and upper back, it usually doesn't appear in the throat area. If you have painful sores on your throat, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the exact cause and receive proper treatment.
A few possible causes of throat sores that can resemble pimples include:
- Strep throat: A bacterial infection of the throat characterized by sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and white or yellow spots on the back of the throat.
- Tonsillitis: Inflammation or infection of the tonsils, which are small glands at the back of the throat. Symptoms include sore throat, difficulty swallowing, swollen tonsils, and sometimes fever.
- Canker sores: These are small, painful ulcers that can develop on the inside of the mouth, including the throat. They can be caused by various factors, such as stress, certain foods, or nutritional deficiencies.
- Herpangina: A viral infection primarily affecting children, characterized by fever, sore throat, and blisters or ulcers in the mouth and throat.
- Pharyngitis: General inflammation of the pharynx (the area at the back of the throat). Viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or irritants can cause it.
- Rare conditions: Sometimes, throat sores can be a symptom of more serious underlying conditions, such as certain autoimmune disorders or viral infections like herpes simplex.
If you have persistent or severe throat sores that don't improve within a few days or are accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it's important to seek medical attention for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
