Olecranon Bursitis: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

The medical term for inflammation of the superficial olecranal bursa is olecranon bursitis.

It is a condition that causes pain, swelling, and tenderness over the point of the elbow. The olecranon bursa is a fluid-filled sac that lies between the skin and the bone at the tip of the elbow. It helps to reduce friction between the two surfaces and allows the elbow to move smoothly. Olecranon bursitis can be caused by trauma to the elbow, overuse of the elbow, or infection. Treatment typically involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to drain the bursa or remove the bursa sac.
