Polyethylene Glycol (PEG 3350) & MiraLax: Understanding Constipation Relief
MiraLax is the brand name for polyethylene glycol 3350. The generic name was used more prominently when the medication was only available by prescription. According to Eureka Alert, MiraLax switched to an over-the-counter medication in 2007.-
Function
-
MiraLax is an osmotic laxative prescribed to treat constipation. Osmotics create excess water in the intestine to loosen stool buildups. Milk of Magnesia and magnesium citrate are also osmotics.
Use
-
Mix polyethylene glycol 3350 or MiraLax powder with liquid for oral consumption. Take once daily for up to two weeks.
Dietary Instructions
-
MedlinePlus recommends a diet rich in high-fiber foods, fruits and vegetables while taking MiraLax or the generic polyethylene glycol 3350. These foods can help with stool relaxation. Eating healthy foods may diminish your need for laxatives.
Side Effects
-
Common side effects include nausea, gas and bloating. Contact your doctor immediately if you get a rash or diarrhea. Call an ambulance if you have seizures or confusion.
Warning
-
Polyethylene glycol 3350 can become habit forming. Take as directed on the label or consult your doctor.
