Bontril (Phentermine): Side Effects, Risks & Interactions
Bontril is a medication used in the short-term treatment of obesity. It's effects are similar to those of amphetamines. Bontril is intended to work in conjunction with diet and exercise to promote weight loss.-
Function
-
Bontril side effects are similar to those of amphetamines because they both are central nervous system stimulants. These cause elevated heart rate and blood pressure and decreased appetite.
Effects
-
Bontril side effects include nervousness, anxiety, dizziness, visual difficulties, restlessness, increase in heart rate and rapid breathing.
Benefits
-
Although Bontril is not without side effects, the benefits can outweigh the risks in an obese patient. Obesity can cause hypertension, diabetes and heart disease.
Considerations
-
Bontril side effects can be intensified if the patient has other medical conditions such as thyroid problems, seizure or anxiety disorders, or diabetes. A physician may decrease the dosage to minimize adverse reactions.
Warning
-
Serious Bontril side effects include swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue or throat, high blood pressure, irregular heart rate, vision problems, hallucinations, confusion and abnormal behaviors. The patient needs to seek immediate medical attention if any of these reactions occur.
