Pudendal Nerve: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment
The pudendal nerve runs throughout the genital and anal area of the human body. Although the nerve route may be slightly different for each person, the nerve has three branches. Pudendal neuropathy occurs when any of the three branches becomes entrapped, inflamed or damaged.-
Possible Causes

Although the exact cause for pudendal neuropathy is not fully understood, causes may include infections, autoimmune disease, trauma to the area, pressure on the nerve, childbirth, excessive sitting or even surgery. According to the Health Organization for Pudendal Education, there may be hereditary causes as well.
Pudendal Neuropathy Symptoms

Pain in the genital or anal area is the predominant symptom. Other symptoms include numbness in the area, a burning sensation in the nerves, stabbing or electrical-type pain, a sensation of a mass in the area, pain during intercourse or sexual dysfunction.
Neuropathy Management

There are several methods used to treat pudendal neuropathy. Exercise of the pelvic floor muscles is a noninvasive treatment. Nerve blocks, medication and surgery are other options.
