Effective Relief for Charlie Horses: Causes & Quick Remedies
A charlie horse is caused by a strain to the leg, thigh or foot which extremely painful. These cramps cause intense, muscle contractions to that area. They can be caused by dehydration, certain medication, muscle fatigue or lactic acid build up in the muscle after exercise. However you get one, you will want to get rid of the pain, as soon as possible.
Instructions
Eat foods high in potassium: On the onset of a charlie horse, eat a banana or drink a glass of orange juice. The pain should ease within ten minutes.
Drink Gatorade: For quick relief of a cramp, drink a glass or two of Gatorade. It will help restore potassium, sodium and electrolytes balance and relieve the pain.
Acupressure: Apply pressure to the back of the calf, half way between the calf and knee. Pinch tightly and hold for one minute.
Take potassium: Take a potassium supplement to address any potassium deficiencies, that cause the spasms. The pain will leave shortly.
