Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Symptoms, Causes & Treatment Options
Multiple sclerosis, or MS for short, is a disease that causes the immune system to erode the protective layering over nerves. This leads to deterioration of the nerves themselves and hinders the brain's communication with the body.-
Symptoms
-
Symptoms of multiple sclerosis can include fatigue, dizziness, weakness or numbness in the limbs (usually on one side of the body at a time), shaking, loss of coordination or balance, tingling or shock-like sensations, double or blurry vision and diminished vision or blindness (one eye at a time) sometimes accompanied by pain in the eye.
Physical Therapy
-
Physical therapy is generally a part of multiple sclerosis treatment. Stretching and strengthening exercises are used to counteract muscle weakening and some of the motor symptoms of the condition.
Corticosteroids
-
These anti-inflammatory medications are an essential part of multiple sclerosis treatment. Methylprednisolone and prednisone are two of the more commonly used.
Other Medications
-
Interferons are often used to slow the progression of multiple sclerosis. Glatiramer, natalizumab and mitoxantrone may be used for their various effects on interfering with the immune system's attack on the body.
Plasma Exchange
-
Plasmapheresis separates the plasma from blood cells. This procedure can help reduce severe symptoms of multiple sclerosis and is generally used when corticosteroids are ineffective.
