The name Hemiplegic Migraine comes from the symptom, hemiplegia, which is paralysis on one side. Hemiplegic migraines are a terrifying experience to anyone who has never had this type of headache. The symptoms present like a stroke and can leave the individual with memory loss for days after the attack. Others experience coordination difficulties that may be permanent.-
Aura

The headache may begin with an aura. This could be blind spots, flashing lights, distorted lines and double vision. The symptoms may last a few minutes or an hour.
Paralysis

Paralysis may occur on the whole side or it can affect parts of one side. This may be the only symptom.
Other Symptoms

Other symptoms may be slurred speech, prickly feeling, numbness, fever, nausea, muscle spasms and vomiting.
Treatments

NSAIDs-- which are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs--are often used. Some doctors prescribe Triptan.

Preventive treatments are sometimes considered. Doctors may prescribe calcium channel blockers.
