Hypoparathyroidism: Symptoms, Causes & Management
Hypoparathyroidism is a condition in which the parathyroid glands do not produce enough parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH is essential for regulating calcium and phosphorus levels in the body. When PTH levels are low, calcium levels can drop and phosphorus levels can rise. This can lead to a number of symptoms, including:
- Muscle cramps and spasms
- Tingling or numbness in the fingers, toes, or lips
- Brittle nails
- Thinning hair
- Dry skin
- Fatigue
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Seizures
- Cataracts
- Tooth decay
In severe cases, hypoparathyroidism can be life-threatening. If you think you may be suffering from hypoparathyroidism, it is important to see a doctor right away.
