Prostate Congestion: Causes, Symptoms & Risk Factors
Prostate congestion is a medical condition in which the prostate swells due to excess fluid. The patient feels the urge to urinate frequently.-
Causes
-
There is a common misconception that prostatic congestion can only occur due to cancer. The causes differ from person to person.
Spinal Cord Injury
-
Males with a previous spinal cord injury can develop prostatic congestion. It might not be noticeable due to normal urinary pattern in such patients. A blood test called the PSA or prostatic specific antigen is used to diagnose the congestion.
Prolonged Arousal
-
If the male does not ejaculate, the fluid produced by the prostate is excreted through urination. However, congestion may occur if the bladder does not empty the prostate.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
-
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is noncancerous enlargement of the prostate. The condition is common in the elderly, and is known to cause prostate congestion.
Prostate Cancer
-
Prostate cancer develops in the prostate and causes prostate congestion.
Alcoholism
-
The excess consumption of alcoholic beverages can also trigger the condition.
