How to Improve a Sinus Infection
Sinusitis is a chronic inflammation of the nasal passages, which produces a yellowish-green mucus and blocks the ability to breathe through the nose. When left untreated, a sinus infection can lead to meningitis, blood clots and vision problems, according to the Mayo Clinic. Further health complications can be prevented by taking over-the-counter or prescription medication to relieve symptoms and kill the infection. Home remedies may also reduce the severity of the infection.Things You'll Need
- Nasal spray
- Prescription antibiotic
- Moist, warm towel
- Drinking water
- Sinus rinse solution
Instructions
Use nasal sprays twice daily. Nasal sprays help alleviate symptoms by reducing inflammation, which helps you to breathe more easily. Corticosteroid and decongestant nasal sprays are available without a prescription at local drug stores.
Visit your doctor. Antibiotics are commonly prescribed to kill the sinus infection. Penicillin and amoxicillin are usually the first antibiotics prescribed to treat the infection, and 5 to 7 days of treatment are required before the infection completely clears.
Apply a warm compress to the face. Relieve facial pain caused by the infection by applying a moist, warm towel to the face for 5 minutes several times daily.
Drink lots of water. Water can help dilute mucus, which shortens the time of infection. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as these can worsen inflammation, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Rinse your sinus cavities. Over-the-counter, saline sinus rinse solutions can help to clear nasal passages and provide temporary relief.
