Understanding the Causes of Nasal & Sinus Infections
Sinusitis is a medical condition in which infections develop in the mucosal cells of the nasal cavities and sinuses. This condition has several causes. In rare cases, it may result in complications.-
Sinusitis
-
Sinusitis inflames the sinuses. It often follows a case of the common cold.
Causes
-
Mucous membranes of the nose and sinuses that are moist and congested can become infected, because they provide an environment for bacteria and other infectious agents to grow.
Symptoms
-
People with sinusitis may develop nasal discharge and congestion, fever and headaches. Fatigue, sore throat and coughing can also occur with this condition.
Complications
-
In rare instances, sinusitis patients may develop meningitis, bone infections or skin infections near the eyes.
Treatment
-
Doctors may prescribe antibiotics for chronic cases of sinusitis, but many cases clear up on their own with plenty of fluids and over-the-counter pain relievers.
