Understanding the Stages of Dengue Fever: Febrile & Critical
Stage 1: Febrile stage
Symptoms:
- High fever (104°F or higher)
- Headache
- Muscle and joint aches
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Rashes may develop on the face and body
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Pain in the eyes
- Swollen lymph nodes
Duration:
The febrile stage usually lasts for 2-7 days.
Stage 2: Critical stage
Symptoms:
- The fever may drop suddenly
- The patient may feel better
- The pulse can become rapid and weak
- The blood pressure can drop
- The skin may become cold and clammy
- Bleeding may occur from the nose, gums, or other sites
Duration:
The critical stage can last for 24-48 hours.
Stage 3: Convalescent stage
Symptoms:
- The fever gradually comes down
- The patient starts to feel better
- The appetite improves
- The rash fades
- Weakness and fatigue may persist
Duration:
The convalescent stage can last for 2-4 weeks.
