* Patients with unexplained metabolic acidosis who have a urine pH greater than 5.5

* Patients with hypokalemia and metabolic acidosis

* Patients with unexplained polyuria

* Patients with certain autoimmune disorders, such as Sjögren's syndrome and lupus
