Urologist vs. Nephrologist: Who Treats Kidney Issues?
A nephrologist is a medical specialist who diagnoses and treats kidney disease, including kidney failure, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, dialysis and kidney transplantation.
A urologist is a medical specialist diagnosing and treats diseases of the male and female urinary tract and male reproductive organs, including the kidneys, bladder, prostate and urethra. A urologist may perform surgeries of the kidneys such as kidney removal, also called a nephrectomy, or partial nephrectomy, in which only a part of the kidney is removed.
