Portal Hypertension: Understanding Causes, Treatments, and Management
There is no one cure for portal hypertension, as the treatment will depend on the underlying cause of the condition. Some of the treatments that may be used to manage portal hypertension include:
- Medications: Medications can be used to reduce portal pressure and improve blood flow to the liver. These medications may include beta-blockers, nitrates, and diuretics.
- Endoscopic therapy: Endoscopic therapy can be used to treat portal hypertension by creating new pathways for blood to flow from the portal vein to the liver. This can be done through a procedure called transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS).
- Surgery: Surgery may be necessary to treat portal hypertension if other treatments have not been successful. Surgical options may include liver transplantation, splenectomy, and mesenteric venous decompression.
