What Are Kidney Infections?
Kidney infections, also called pyelonephritis, occur when bacteria enter the kidneys through the urethra and ureters. The bacteria can cause inflammation and infection in the kidneys, which can lead to serious health problems if left untreated.
Symptoms of kidney infections can include:
* Fever
* Chills
* Pain in the back, side, or abdomen
* Frequent or painful urination
* Cloudy or bloody urine
* Nausea and vomiting
Kidney infections are treated with antibiotics. The type of antibiotic and the length of treatment will depend on the severity of the infection. In some cases, hospitalization may be necessary.
Kidney infections can be prevented by:
* Drinking plenty of fluids
* Avoiding holding your urine for long periods of time
* Practicing good hygiene, especially before and after using the bathroom
* Avoiding sexual intercourse with multiple partners
* Using condoms during sex
* Getting vaccinated against the bacteria that cause kidney infections, such as the E. coli vaccine
If you experience any of the symptoms of a kidney infection, it is important to see a doctor right away. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent serious health problems.
