Understanding Mid-Cycle Cramps (Mittelschmerz): Causes & Relief
Mid-Cycle CrampingMid-cycle cramping, or mittelschmerz, is usually felt as a sharp one-sided pelvic pain that can last for a few hours or several days. Mittelschmerz typically occurs around the time of ovulation, typically day 14 of a 28 day cycle, but can range from day 11 to day 21. Although it can be painful for some, for most women mittelschmerz is a minor symptom.
Possible Causes
The exact cause of mittelschmerz is unknown, but it is thought to be associated with the formation or rupture of the ovarian follicle that releases the egg during ovulation.
