IBS Prevention & Symptom Management: Dietary Strategies
There is no sure way to prevent irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, there are some things you can do to reduce your risk of developing IBS or managing your symptoms if you already have it:
Eat a healthy diet. Eating a diet high in fiber and low in FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) can help to reduce IBS symptoms. FODMAPs are a type of carbohydrate that can be difficult for some people to digest and can cause IBS symptoms such as gas, bloating, and abdominal pain.
Avoid certain foods and drinks. Some foods and drinks can trigger IBS symptoms in some people. Common triggers include dairy products, gluten, caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods.
Manage your stress. Stress can worsen IBS symptoms. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as exercise, yoga, or meditation.
Get regular exercise. Exercise can help to improve digestion and reduce stress, both of which can help to reduce IBS symptoms.
Take probiotics. Probiotics are live bacteria that can help to improve digestion and reduce IBS symptoms.
Talk to your doctor. If you have persistent IBS symptoms, talk to your doctor. There are a number of medications that can help to relieve IBS symptoms.
