Digitalis for Colitis: Understanding Treatment & Dosage

Colitis is the inflammation or swelling of the large intestine or colon. In the initial stages of colitis, dietary changes may be recommended. However, in long-standing cases of colitis, digitalis may be prescribed. Digitalis works by producing a positive inotropic or a kind of stimulating effect on the arteries that supply the colon, increasing the blood flow and decreasing the effects of colitis.

Instructions

    • 1

Consume digitalis tablets after meals. The dosage is directly proportional to the body weight (at a ratio of 1.5%) of the patient; for instance, a dose of 2.1 grams a day is appropriate for a person weighing 140 pounds.

    • 2

Take a tincture of digitalis in the amount of 1ml per day. There is one unit of digitalis in 1 ml of the tincture.

    • 3

Consume powdered digitalis. A daily dose of 30 to 100 mg mixed with a tall glass of lukewarm water or juice is recommended.

    • 4

Continue dosing with digitalis in your chosen form for a period of at least seven days or until symptoms of colitis subside for more than a couple of days.
