Pregnancy After Tubal Ligation: Understanding the Risks & Rare Possibilities
It is possible to get pregnant after having your tubes tied, but it is very rare. The procedure is typically effective in preventing pregnancy, but there is a small chance that the fallopian tubes can reconnect or that sperm can travel through other pathways to reach the eggs.
Pregnancy After Tubal Ligation
- Pregnancy can occur after a tubal ligation if the fallopian tubes grow back together. This is called tubal recanalization and happens in about 1 in 200 women who have their tubes tied.
- Pregnancy can also occur if the ends of the fallopian tubes were not properly sealed during the tubal ligation. This happens in about 1 in 100 women who have their tubes tied.
- In very rare cases, pregnancy can occur if sperm travel through the uterus and into the fallopian tubes. This is called transuterine migration and happens in about 1 in 1,000 women who have their tubes tied.
If you have had your tubes tied and you are experiencing symptoms of pregnancy, such as a missed period, nausea, or fatigue, it is important to see your doctor right away.
Additional symptoms that may indicate pregnancy after tubal ligation include:
- Abdominal pain
- Backache
- Breast tenderness
- Frequent urination
- Bloating
- Weight gain
If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to see your doctor to rule out pregnancy.
Belly gets hard and there is movement
A hard belly and movement can be signs of pregnancy, but they can also be caused by other conditions, such as gas, constipation, or bloating. If you are concerned about your symptoms, it is important to see your doctor for a diagnosis.
