Unexplained Infertility: Causes, Symptoms & What to Do
Unexplained infertility is a medical condition in which a couple has been unable to conceive a child even though they are both fertile and have regular sexual intercourse without contraception. Unexplained infertility accounts for approximately 10-20% of all infertility cases.
There are many possible causes of unexplained infertility. Some potential factors include:
- Immunological issues, such as an immune system response that prevents the sperm from fertilizing the egg
- Genetic factors, such as defects in the genes that control fertility
- Ovulation problems, such as irregular ovulation or anovulation
- Sperm problems, such as low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or abnormal sperm morphology
- Endometriosis, a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus
- Polycystic ovary syndrome, a hormonal imbalance that affects ovulation
- Pelvic inflammatory disease, an infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries
If you are experiencing unexplained infertility, your doctor may recommend a variety of tests and procedures to identify the cause of your infertility and develop a treatment plan. Treatment for unexplained infertility may include medications, surgery, assisted reproductive technologies (such as in vitro fertilization, or IVF), or a combination of these approaches.
