Key Immune Cells in Line Defense Against Pathogens
- Neutrophils: These are the most abundant type of white blood cell and are the first to respond to an infection. They engulf and destroy bacteria and other foreign particles.- Macrophages: These are large, phagocytic cells that are found in tissues throughout the body. - Natural killer (NK) cells: These cells can recognize and kill virus-infected cells and tumor cells.
- Eosinophils: These cells are involved in defense against parasitic infections. They release toxins that can kill parasites.
- Basophils: These cells are involved in the allergic response. They release histamine and other inflammatory mediators when they are activated.
