What can you get E. coli from?
E. coli can be transmitted through contaminated food or water, or through contact with infected animals or people. Some specific examples of sources of E. coli include:
- Undercooked or raw ground beef, poultry, pork, or seafood
- Unpasteurized milk or apple cider
- Contaminated produce, such as leafy greens, sprouts, or cucumbers
- Contaminated swimming water or drinking water
- Contact with pets, especially young animals or reptiles
- Contact with feces from infected animals or people (direct contact or through surfaces)
- Travel to a region where E. coli is endemic
It's important to note that there are different strains of E. coli, and not all strains cause illness. Some strains, such as E. coli O157:H7, produce toxins that can cause severe illness, while others may be harmless or cause mild symptoms.
