ASC-US Pap Smear Results: Understanding Atypical Squamous Cells
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) is a diagnosis given to Pap smear results that show abnormal cells but not enough to be classified as cancerous or precancerous. ASC-US is the most common abnormal Pap smear result, and it is estimated to occur in 5-10% of all Pap smears.
Most cases of ASC-US are caused by inflammation or infection, such as from a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis. However, ASC-US can also be a sign of precancerous changes in the cells of the cervix. Therefore, it is important to follow up with your doctor for further testing and monitoring if you receive an ASC-US Pap smear result.
Further testing for ASC-US may include:
* Repeat Pap smear in 6 months
* HPV testing
* Colposcopy, a procedure in which the cervix is examined with a magnifying instrument
Treatment for ASC-US is typically not necessary, but it may be recommended if the condition persists or if there are other signs of precancer. Treatment options may include:
* Laser therapy
* Cryotherapy
* Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP)
* Cone biopsy
