To become infected with tuberculosis, a susceptible individual must breathe in airborne droplets that contain the bacteria _Mycobacterium tuberculosis_ from a person who is sick with tuberculosis. Prolonged, close contact with such a person is required for infection to occur; casual contact - for example, on public transport or in a park or grocery store - is unlikely to spread TB.
