Understanding Disease Transmission: 2 Common Pathways
There are multiple ways to catch a disease. Here are two common ways:
1. Infectious Contact: This involves direct or indirect contact with an infected person or animal. Contact can occur through:
- Direct Contact: Touching, kissing, or coming into physical contact with an infected person or their bodily fluids (such as blood, saliva, or mucus).
- Indirect Contact: Touching surfaces or objects contaminated with the infectious agent and then touching your face, particularly the eyes, nose, or mouth.
2. Airborne Transmission: Some diseases spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Inhaling these airborne respiratory droplets containing the infectious agent can cause infection. This is common with diseases like the flu, measles, and COVID-19.
