Coccidia: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment - What to Know
Coccidia are microscopic parasites that can infect the intestinal tract of both humans and animals. They are spread through contact with contaminated food or water, or through contact with infected animals.
Symptoms of coccidiosis (the infection caused by coccidia) can include:
* Diarrhea
* Abdominal pain
* Cramping
* Fever
* Nausea
* Vomiting
* Weight loss
Coccidiosis is usually a mild disease that resolves on its own within a few weeks. However, it can be more severe in people with weakened immune systems, such as young children, the elderly, and people with HIV/AIDS.
In severe cases, coccidiosis can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and malnutrition. In some cases, it can also be fatal.
Treatment for coccidiosis involves taking medications to kill the coccidia. These medications are usually taken for 5-10 days.
Prevention of coccidiosis involves:
* Washing your hands thoroughly before eating and after using the bathroom
* Avoiding contact with infected animals
* Drinking only clean water
* Eating only cooked food
