Cefdinir (Omnicef): Uses, Dosage & Side Effects
Cefdinir is also known as Omnicef. It is an antibiotic used to treat mild to moderate infections.-
Function

Cefdinir is typically used with certain types of pneumonia, bronchitis, tonsillitis, ear infections and sinus infections. As with all antibiotics, it is not effective against viral infections such as the common cold or the flu.
Time Frame

In uncomplicated cases, cefdinir is prescribed be to taken twice a day for 5 to 10 days. Antibiotics must be taken for the full length of time prescribed, even if symptoms improve early.
Identification

Side effects of cefdinir include headache, vomiting and diarrhea. The doctor should be contacted immediately if the following side effects occur: rash, swelling in the face and tongue, and difficulty breathing.
Considerations

Magnesium and aluminum containing antacids should be taken either 2 hours before or 2 hours after cefdinir. These types of antacids may cause cefdinir to not be fully effective.
Warning

The doctor should be notified of any history of allergic reaction to penicillin or cephalosporins as this increases the risk for allergic reaction to cefdinir.
