Safe Sharps Disposal in South Carolina: A Guide
Many people have medical conditions that require the use of needles, syringes or lancets ("sharps") at home. It is important to dispose of sharps safely to prevent the spread of disease. The South Carolina Department of Environmental Control (SCDHEC) "Get the Point" program teaches residents how to safely, simply and conveniently dispose of sharps.Things You'll Need
- "Get the Point" warning label
- Empty bleach or detergent bottle
- Clear mailing tape
Instructions
Print a "Get the Point" warning label, available from scdhec.gov/getthepoint. DHEC will send you free warning label stickers if you contact them at 800-285-5257.
Tape the printed warning label, or put the sticker, on an empty bleach or detergent bottle.
Place used needles, syringes or lancets in the bottle as you use them. Be sure to cap the bottle tightly between each use.
When the bottle is ¾ full, put tape over the closed bottle cap and throw the bottle into your household trash.
