Tetanus Vaccine: Contraindications and Allergic Reactions
The only contraindication to tetanus toxoid, tetanus antitoxin, or tetanus immune globulin is a history of anaphylaxis to a previous dose of tetanus toxoid.
For individuals with a history of a generalized urticarial rash after a previous dose of tetanus toxoid, the likelihood of a serious allergic reaction after a subsequent dose is very small. Such persons should receive tetanus toxoid because the benefits far outweigh the risks of a moderate reaction.
