Fibroids & Pap Smears: Do Uterine Fibroids Affect Pap Results?
Fibroids, which are non-cancerous growths of the uterus, do not directly affect the results of a Pap smear. A Pap smear is a screening test used to detect potentially precancerous or cancerous changes in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. Fibroids, which are located in the uterine muscle, do not typically interfere with the collection of cells during a Pap smear.
Fibroids can sometimes cause abnormal bleeding or other changes in the menstrual cycle, which may lead a healthcare provider to recommend additional testing or closer monitoring. However, fibroids themselves do not directly affect the accuracy or interpretation of a Pap smear.
